Born a King on Bethlehem's plain Gold I bring to crown Him again King forever, ceasing never Over us all to reign...... The first Sunday of Epiphany is this Sunday to honor the Magi's (wise men's) first gift of Gold given to Jesus Christ the King of Kings. As with all things with God there is meaning and reasons why. Gold showed Jesus' Kingship. Gold was one of the first metals known to man, probably because it was found in nature in an almost pure state and can be refined and worked with simple tools. It is mentioned hundreds of times in the Holy Bible, usually with emphasis on it as a precious metal. Because it has historically been accepted as valuable and as a symbol of wealth and kingship, it is appropriate it is one of the three gifts brought to the Christ Child. It is also thought to have been used, at least in part, for their flight into to Egypt. All the gifts were extremely expensive and with meaning. As for the wise men themselves we have no idea how many there were. But most historians believe it would have been more than three and they likely traveled in a caravan. according to some historical sources magi had 12 in their group. Magi is plural for Magus, where we get the word magic. Whatever the case The Bible never says how many there were only what gifts they brought. Next week will be the gift of Frankincense. In this creation I have used a purple background to also show royalty, the red roses is the flower that is symbolic of Christ, the angel is there because of the angel's important part of Christ Birth and throughout his early life. The crown for Kingship, Christ is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the three candles for the Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and Mary and the infant Jesus for as the Bible says in Matthew 2 11 And when they (the wise men) were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
