Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States of America. His birthday is Feb. 12th. In order to not have so many days off in Feb for federal holidays under President Richard M. Nixon the US Congress decided and President Nixon signed into law a day that honor both Washington and Lincoln. It was to be called President's Day. The day was set to be between their birthdays. It is the Monday after the Sunday AFTER Lincoln's birthday, or the Monday before Washington's Birthday. In other words if Lincoln's birthday came on a Sunday you would wait a week and celebrate Presidents Day a week later on that Monday. This year it will be the 20th. That way it would never fall on one or the other's exact day but be between them. President Washington's real birthday is Feb. 22. This made it so every year a day would be taken off on Monday giving the government workers at least, and congress a three day weekend. Before that the US Post Office and the Federal Government took off both days.. it didn't matter where they fell. Schools usually only took them off if they fell on a Friday or Monday. These two President's were the only two that had Federal holidays and both in February. One was our first President and a mighty good man, honorable man the second the 16th that held the Union together and another mighty good and honorable man!
